Experts discuss development of higher education in Central Asia

Bishkek, June 19, 2026 /Kabar/. The two-day Central Asian Policy Dialogue "Using UNESCO Conventions on the Recognition of Qualifications for Regional Integration," organized by UNESCO with the support of Korea Funds-in-Trust (KFIT), concluded in Astana.

According to the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Innovation of Kyrgyzstan, the event brought together representatives of education ministries, universities, quality assurance agencies, and international experts from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The Kyrgyz delegation was represented by Svetlana Sirmbard, Rector of Adam University, Esengeldi Zhumadilov, Rector of Salymbekov University, and Onola Umankulova, Director of the EdNet accreditation agency.

The participants discussed mechanisms for implementing the Tokyo Convention and the UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications, as well as the development of the Central Asian Higher Education Area (CAHEA), including issues of academic mobility, quality assurance, and the recognition of micro-qualifications and flexible educational pathways.

Following the meeting, the participants formulated proposals for a roadmap for the development of higher education in Central Asia and emphasized the importance of strengthening trust between the region's national education systems.
