Bishkek, Jan. 21, 2026. /Kabar/. An extreme cold wave that swept across large parts of Asia in early 2026 has had a noticeable impact on winter tourism in Kyrgyzstan, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and unusually low temperatures to mountainous regions of the country, according to Travel and Tour World.

In Kyrgyzstan, severe winter weather significantly altered travel conditions in popular tourist areas. Heavy snowfall transformed the Issyk-Kul Lake region into a winter landscape, while access to some roads and mountain passes was temporarily restricted due to snow accumulation. The Tien Shan mountain range, traditionally popular for trekking, became largely inaccessible to regular tourists without specialized winter equipment.

Despite the difficult conditions, the extreme cold also created new opportunities for adventure tourism. Snow trekking, winter expeditions, and backcountry skiing attracted experienced travelers seeking remote routes and untouched winter scenery. Tourism experts noted that winter travel in Kyrgyzstan during this period required careful planning and strict safety measures.

The cold wave also affected other countries in Central Asia. In Kazakhstan, Arctic air caused temperatures to fall to minus 35 degrees Celsius in some regions, disrupting transport in major cities, including Almaty and Astana. At the same time, ski resorts such as Shymbulak continued operating, offering stable snow conditions and less crowded alternatives to European destinations.

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan experienced milder snowfall but faced sharp temperature fluctuations in urban areas. In Tajikistan, icy conditions temporarily limited access to several mountain passes, slowing mountain tourism, while cultural tourism in cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara continued largely without interruption.

Analysts note that despite the severe winter conditions, Central Asia remains attractive for tourists seeking adventure, cultural experiences, and less crowded destinations. With adequate preparation, winter travel across the region continues to offer unique opportunities even amid extreme weather challenges.
