The high-level talks between Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan, held in Cholpon-Ata, are a logical continuation of the country's leadership's multi-vector foreign policy. Economist Nurgul Akimova stated in her interview with Kabar news agency.

Pakistan is one of the world's leading economies in a number of areas, and has experience in resolving serious international disputes. What does Pakistani leader's visit to Kyrgyzstan indicate?

Bishkek has traditionally built close relations with Russia, China, and the CIS countries. The restoration of relations with Pakistan suggests that Kyrgyzstan is accessing South Asia through this country. These negotiations are a logical continuation of the country's leadership's multi-vector foreign policy.

Pakistan is known to maintain an independent foreign policy position. Furthermore, it has nuclear power. The country has served as a key mediator between Iran and the United States and is an important regional player. Kyrgyzstan, in turn, currently chairs the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and is strengthening its political clout. I am confident that the agreements reached in December 2025 will be formalized in July 2026.

What are the key aspects of economic cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan?

First and foremost, for Kyrgyzstan, this is an opportunity to gain access to the sea. Pakistan could become an alternative to dependence on ports in China, Russia, or Iran. Furthermore, this country, with a population of approximately 250 million, is a member of the Economic Cooperation Organization. This is a beneficial partnership for us.

I'd also like to highlight the potential revenues in the energy sector. As part of the CASA-1000 project, Kyrgyzstan will be able to export excess electricity. I believe the projected revenue for both countries is over $250 million.

How are Kyrgyz exporters currently accessing South Asian markets?

Currently, Kyrgyz businesses ship goods south by road. Logistically, there's the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor from Kashgar to Karachi. However, it's not a rail corridor—transportation is carried out only by road. As is well known, the volume of Kyrgyz goods is still very small. Furthermore, the route to Karachi remains too long, and transit is expensive.

Will China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project solve this problem in future?

If the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway starts to operate, an alternative and cheaper route will emerge. This will increase trade turnover and boost freight traffic. Once completed, transport flow and trade volume will increase. However, until construction is complete, it's premature to discuss logistics and access to the sea, since, as noted, the infrastructure is still underdeveloped. Most importantly, in addition to trade with the CIS countries and China, opportunities for developing alternative economic directions will open up. If Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan demonstrate political will, this will boost economic development and attract investment. Talks with the President of Pakistan indicate that an important political step has already been taken.
