Bishkek, Sept. 18, 2025 /Kabar/. A Kyrgyz delegation, led by Meder Mashiev, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Technical Supervision, participated in the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the agency, the conference is being held in Vienna from September 15 to 19.

In his address at the plenary session, Meder Mashiev noted Kyrgyzstan's continued commitment to the IAEA's nuclear safety goals and principles, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, nuclear and radiation safety, and non-proliferation.

Kyrgyzstan presented the results of its work on environmental and radiation safety. Specifically, projects to remediate uranium legacy sites in the villages of Min-Kush and Shekaftar were completed, supported by the EBRD-managed Environmental Remediation Account for Central Asia. Particular attention was given to upcoming reclamation activities in the town of Mailuu-Suu, a priority site.

As part of the conference, a ceremony was held to present IAEA Director General Mariano Grossi with documents on Kyrgyzstan's accession to two key international conventions:

  • The Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident;
  • The Convention on Assistance in the Case of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency.

Furthermore, a new agreement was signed with the IAEA: the Country Framework for Technical Cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the IAEA for 2026-2031. The document defines priority areas of cooperation, including medicine, agriculture, personnel training, and environmental safety.

In addition, within the framework of the conference, the Kyrgyz delegation also held a number of bilateral meetings, including with representatives of the Departments of Nuclear Safety and Safeguards of the IAEA, Interpol, the OPEC Fund, and the Global Mining and Critical Minerals Alliance of UNIDO.
