Kyrgyzstan to chair CIS Atomic Energy Commission

Bishkek, June 16, 2026 /Kabar/. First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Mazaripov participated in the 27th meeting of the CIS Commission on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, which took place on June 10 in Almaty, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Delegations from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan participated in the meeting.

Anar Dzhanakhmedov, Deputy Director of the Economic Cooperation Department of the CIS Executive Committee; Gumar Sergazin, Deputy Chairman of the Agency of Kazakhstan on Atomic Energy; and Akylbek Mazaripov, the newly elected Chairman of the Commission, addressed the participants with welcoming remarks.

During the meeting, participants approved the interim report on the implementation of the scientific research program at the Kazakhstan Materials Science Tokamak for 2024–2026, reviewed the results of projects to develop public acceptance of nuclear energy in Central Asian countries, and supported the draft regulations for the Regional Competence Council for Radioactive Waste Management.

The draft Program for the Safe Management of Obsolete Pesticides in CIS Member States was also reviewed and generally approved.

The commission members heard reports on the development of nuclear energy with fast neutron reactors and closed nuclear fuel cycles, the training of nuclear medicine specialists through IAEA programs and initiatives, additional training for faculty at specialized universities in the CIS, and the use of digital simulators for operating personnel at energy facilities.

Furthermore, the participants supported proposals to develop a cooperation program among CIS countries in the design, production, and operation of high-tech medical equipment, as well as concept for developing unified approaches to state regulation of nuclear energy safety.

Particular attention was paid to Kyrgyzstan's initiative to create an Association of Cities and Other Settlements with Uranium Legacy. The corresponding concept was presented by Asel Seitkazieva, Director of the Tailings Management Department at the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan. The document aims to develop international cooperation, exchange experience in land reclamation, and implement joint socio-economic sustainable development projects.

As part of the technical tour, the meeting participants visited the Institute of Nuclear Physics of Kazakhstan, where they learned about the institution's activities and promising areas of scientific research.
