Bishkek, April 28, 2026. /Kabar/. Today, the construction of a hydroelectric power plant cascade project officially began in Chatkal district.
According to Jalal-Abad oblast governor, the project is being implemented as a public-private partnership (PPP) with a total investment of $259.8 million. In addition to the energy benefits, the launch of the facility will provide irrigation water to over a thousand hectares of arid land.
Construction of two major facilities began today as part of the first phase. The first is a municipal small hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 5 MW at the Kara-Korum site in the Kanysh-Kiya rural district. The second is a municipal solar power plant with a capacity of 1 MW in the village of Jany-Bazar.
The small hydroelectric power plant is expected to generate an average of approximately 20 million kWh of electricity per year, and the solar power plant, 1.6 million kWh. These figures will help significantly reduce the region's electricity shortage and decrease dependence on imported resources.
Approximately $8 million in investment has been attracted for the current project. Funding comes from government support, municipal resources, and private investors.
Upon completion, construction will create over 100 new jobs in the district.
