Bishkek, Jan. 21, 2026. /Kabar/. Traffic congestion remains a pressing issue in the capital. Bishkek Mayor Aibek Dzhunushaliev spoke about methods for combating congestion in a podcast broadcast by the Kabar news agency.
The mayor noted that, according to the latest data, more than 460,000 vehicles are registered in the capital. He emphasized that the infrastructure could not cope with this volume, so active work began in 2024. However, the problem cannot be solved with a single measure; a comprehensive approach is needed.
The mayor noted that road expansion is not simply an attempt to accommodate more cars, but rather to bring streets into compliance with the General Plan.
"Many roads were built with buildings that exceeded the 'red lines.' We are returning the roads to their original, standard condition," he explained.
Aibek Dzhunushaliev stated that after road repairs and interchange construction are completed, the city will inevitably have to implement some restrictions. He noted the heated criticism of the idea of restricting traffic on odd and even days, noting that society needs time to accept such changes.
"In the future, parking prices in the central part of the capital must be increased. Residents shouldn't have to choose between driving or taking the bus. The decision should be clear: drive to the outskirts, and use public transport to get around the center. We must guide residents to a point where choosing public transport is automatic," Aibek Dzhunushaliev emphasized.
