Bishkek, March 13, 2026. /Kabar/. New carbon project aimed at supporting the transition to sustainable energy is expected to be signed in Kyrgyzstan. This was announced by Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev at a meeting with World Bank representative Hugh Riddell.

According to the ministry, the initiative will be implemented within the framework of the iFIRST program and will be one of the first steps in carbon financing in the country.

As noted, the main features of the project are that, according to the project mechanism, the more Kyrgyzstan reduces greenhouse gases emitted into the air through reforms in the energy sector, the higher the amount of financing will be.

If a reduction in harmful gases emitted into the air is confirmed, the country will be allocated up to $ 4.5 million. In addition, it is planned to attract up to $5.5 million in additional funds through carbon market mechanisms.

$1.5 million will be allocated on a grant basis, which will be used to strengthen the institutional capacity of state bodies, create a greenhouse gas accounting system, and launch a national carbon unit registry.

As noted by the ministry, the funds raised will be used to implement the country's climate commitments under the Paris Agreement. Experts note that this initiative will open up new opportunities for modernizing the energy sector and attracting international climate investments.
