Bishkek, July 1, 2026 /Kabar/. Kyrgyz Health Minister Damir Osmonov met with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, who arrived in Kyrgyzstan on official visit.
The representatives of Special Envoy of the UN Economic Commission for Europe, the World Health Organization, and other members of the delegation also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues of road traffic injury prevention, improving the system of medical care for accident victims, and the need to further strengthen interagency cooperation in the area of road safety.
Particular attention was paid to the fact that road accidents remain a serious medical and social problem, leading to deaths, disability, and a significant burden on the healthcare system.
According to the ministry of health, medical organizations provide assistance to thousands of road accident victims every year, while the incidence of injuries, including among two-wheeled vehicle users, continues to rise.
Jean Todt presented UN international road safety initiatives and discussed modern solutions for protecting road users, including the development of an affordable next-generation motorcycle helmet, as well as global information campaigns aimed at promoting the use of seat belts and motorcycle helmets, speeding, and avoiding drunk driving.
In addition, they discussed preparations for the UN Global Conference on Road Safety, which will be held on July 20–21 in the United States. Damir Osmonov expressed interest in participating in the event and noted the importance of sharing international experience in road traffic injury prevention.
Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their commitment to further cooperation aimed at reducing road fatalities and injuries, developing prevention programs, and improving national road safety policies.
