OHCHR notes Kyrgyzstan's leadership in human rights in Central Asian region

Bishkek, March 20, 2025. /Kabar /. On March 19, Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in Bishkek as part of his visit to Kyrgyzstan.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the minister noted that Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to strengthening cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and also highly appreciated the organization's contribution to the development of democratic institutions in the country.

Kulubaev emphasized that Kyrgyzstan is currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the third time, which indicates recognition by the international community of the republic's achievements in this area.

The head of the Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that, as a member of the UNHRC, our country actively participates in its work. An example of this is the Resolution "Informing the Human Rights Council on the Human Rights Advisers Program", initiated by Kyrgyzstan and adopted during the 56th (summer 2024) session of the UNHRC. This resolution allows small states to build up their capacity in the field of human rights.

The minister also noted that today Kyrgyzstan is actively working to humanize criminal legislation, reform the judicial and law enforcement systems, and effectively implement social programs, including those related to women and children.

The High Commissioner expressed gratitude for the high assessment, noted Kyrgyzstan's leadership in the field of human rights in the region, as well as the importance of further promoting freedom of speech and strengthening civil society, which is one of the important components in the development of democratic institutions.

Volker Turk assured that OHCHR will continue to provide Kyrgyzstan with all necessary assistance on issues of ensuring the rule of law and protecting human rights.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue cooperation to strengthen the capacity of state bodies of Kyrgyzstan in the field of human rights protection.
