Railway, tram, and metrobus: Bishkek's transport network to change by 2050

Bishkek, Oct. 27, 2025. /Kabar/. The general plan for the city of Bishkek until 2050 envisages the formation of three new systems of accelerated types of public passenger transport aimed at increasing capacity and improving transport accessibility in the capital.

It is planned to organize a route in the "West – Center – East" direction with access to agglomeration connections with the villages of Kozhomkul and Novopokrovka.

The project includes:

  • electrification of a 28 km railway section;
  • construction of second tracks on single-track sections;
  • reconstruction of 4 existing stations - Bishkek-1, Bishkek-2, Sokuluk and Alamedin;
  • construction of 4 new and reconstruction of 4 existing stops (including "Ala-Too", "Lenin Plant", "Selsovet", "Nooruz");
  • construction of a railway depot.

Tram lines will connect the "South – Center" and "South-west – South-east" directions, including connection to the new bus station.

It is planned:

  • construction of 45.1 km of tram tracks;
  • creation of one tram depot.

A metrobus network with a total length of 93.4 km is planned, connecting the "North – South" and "North – Center" directions with access to external transport facilities - bus stations and Manas International Airport. Transport and Transfer Hubs

To ensure a transfer-based transportation model in Bishkek, it is planned to organize 19 transport and transfer hubs (TTHs) of three levels:

National significance – based on Manas Airport, the existing and new bus stations, and the Bishkek-2 railway station;

  • Agglomeration significance – based on inner-city stations and stops;
  • City significance – at the intersections of tram lines and non-rail transport routes.

General Plan envisages the development of a route network for buses and electric buses to serve existing and new residential and business areas.

The total length of the street and road network with prospective bus/electric bus lines will be 685.4 km.

Also other plans are:

  • construction of two new bus depots and reconstruction of four existing ones;
  • organization of 12 new and reconstruction of 7 existing layover and turning areas;
  • construction of 5 terminal areas for trams.

Bishkek Mayor office has announced public hearings on the draft General Plan until 2050, which will be held on December 24-25, 2025, broken down by districts.
