Bishkek, Aug. 18, 2026 /Kabar/. Kyrgyzstan is implementing 27 landslide risk reduction projects, which are using new engineering methods for protecting territories for the first time in Central Asia.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, landslide processes usually intensify in the spring due to melting snow and increased precipitation. The threat also persists in the fall, when prolonged rains increase soil moisture.

The department stated that active work is currently underway at five sites, while engineering and survey work is underway at the remaining sites.

Biymyrza Project

In Biymyrza village, Kara-Kulja district of Osh Region, a protective dam has been built at the foot of a mountain slope to protect against landslides. The work has been fully completed, protecting 13 homes.

Chakmak Project

Protective dams have been built in the town of Gulcho and Kyrkol, the Chakmak section of the Alay district. Work is currently underway to hand over the facilities to local authorities.

Kakyr Project

In Kakyr, Uzgen District, landslide mitigation and terracing are being used to protect 24 homes. The project began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

Kommunist Project

In Myrza-Ake, Uzgen district, work is underway to partially reduce the dangerous landslide mass on an unstable slope. Work began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.

Shadybek-Bulak Project

In Avletim, Aksy district of the Jalal-Abad region, work to reduce the landslide mass on an unstable slope is nearly complete. Land reclamation and the transfer of the site to the local administration are still ongoing.

Ken-Zhylga Project

The project propose a closed-loop drainage system is planned for the diversion of groundwater into a safe channel. This method is aimed at reducing slope instability and preventing landslides.

In total, the implementation of the above projects will protect 276 residential buildings, 1,380 residents, 8 social infrastructure facilities, and 12 kilometers of roads from landslides.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations calls on citizens to exercise vigilance in landslide-prone areas, strictly follow official warnings and, if necessary, promptly evacuate to a safe place.
