Bishkek, Nov. 14, 2025. /Kabar/. Small hydropower plants are being commissioned, and old units are undergoing reconstruction, Energy Minister of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibrayev told at a press conference.

According to him, thanks to this work, the country will receive additional electricity generation capacity.

"In the coming years, about 40 small hydropower plants will be built in the country. Not a single new plant has been built before."

In 2010, the first unit of the Kambar-Ata Hydropower Plant was built. Since then, four units of the Toktogul Hydropower Plant have been commissioned. Each of them has a capacity of 60 MW, providing a total of 240 MW. This year, the Toktogul Hydro Power Plant celebrated its 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago, its capacity was 1,200 MW, but it has now been increased to 1,440 MW.

Furthermore, the Uch-Korgon Hydro Power Plant had four units with a capacity of 180 MW. Two units have already been reconstructed, and the remaining two are scheduled to be commissioned next year. This will add another 36 MW—9 MW per unit.

The Orto-Tokoy Hydro Power Plant will begin operations around April. We are reconstructing hydroelectric power plants, increasing their total capacity by approximately 60 MW annually," the minister noted.
