Bishkek, April 22, 2026. /Kabar/. The event dedicated to the memory of Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident victims, which occurred 40 years ago, was held in Batken. This was reported by the Batken oblast administration.
The event was attended by Mamyrzhan Rakhimov, Batken oblast governor, local leaders, those involved in the cleanup efforts, and their families.
"We express our deep gratitude to all those involved in Chernobyl events and bow to your courage, responsibility, and heroism. The memory of our compatriots who lost their lives due to the consequences of this disaster will never be forgotten," the head of the region said.
During the event, wreaths were laid at the monument to the victims of the Chernobyl disaster, and a memorial prayer was read in their honor.
It is noted that 146 people from Batken Region participated in the cleanup efforts after the accident, which occurred on April 26, 1986, 83 of whom are still alive today.
"On this day, the veterans' heroism was recognized and they were presented with awards on behalf of the governor," the statement says.
